A team of researchers at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has developed a novel method to recover rare earth elements (REEs) from phosphogypsum, a waste product of phosphate rock mining. REEs are a class of metallic elements (including neodymium, dysprosium, cerium, yttrium, etc.) that have become essential in the digital age.

Nov 18, 2010· Rare earth elements in US not so rare, report finds. Placer deposits are alluvial formations of sandy sediments, which often contain concentrations of heavy, dense minerals, some containing REE. Phosphorite deposits, which mostly occur in the southeastern, contain large amounts of phosphatebearing minerals.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 15 chemical elements in the periodic table, specifically the lanthanides. Two other elements, scandium and yttrium, have a similar physiochemistry to the lanthanides, are commonly found in the same mineral assemblages, and are often referred to as REEs. Although relatively

Each year an estimated 56,000 metric tons (t) of rare earth elements (REEs), including 23,000 t of heavy REEs (HREEs), are mined, beneficiated, and put into solution, but not recovered, by operations associated with the global phosphate fertilizer industry. Importantly, the REEs in sedimentary phosphorites are nearly extractable, using technologies currently employed to meet global ...

Mar 13, 2019· Worldwide, about 100,000 tons of rareearth elements per year end up in PG waste. That's almost as much as the nearly 126,000 tons of rareearth oxides produced worldwide each year. To test whether rareearth elements could be obtained from PG, researchers doped synthetic phosphogypsum with six rareearth elements—yttrium, cerium, neodymium, samarium, europium and ytterbium.

In the present study, the feasibility to use phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) to develop a biological leaching process of rare earth elements (REE) from monazitebearing ore was determined. To predict the REE leaching capacity of bacteria, the phosphate solubilizing abilities of 10 species of PSB were determined by halo zone formation on Reyes minimal agar media supplemented with bromo ...
